Byron & Byron Wooden Bay Window Curtain Pole

Metamorph is Byron & Byron's bay window system, and one of very few wooden poles that follows the curve of a bay rather than meeting it in a corner joint. Each pole is turned, bent and finished by hand in Byron's north London workshop, where the family has been making curtain poles since 1984. The Rustica collection shown here is solid ash and oak.

Made to your bay

Every Metamorph pole is manufactured from your own measurements and supplied in one fixed piece. The set includes the bent pole, a pair of finials in your chosen style, adjustable metal bay brackets and metal passing rings, which travel over each bracket so the curtains draw round the full width of the bay. The adjustable brackets come in chrome, brass or antique brass, or painted to complement the pole.

Choosing the shape and size

Count the bends, not the sides. A corner window has one bend, a standard three-sided bay has two, and a five-sided bay has four.

Then measure roughly along the wall, following the shape of the bay, and add the sides together. Pick the band that total falls into. If you are between two bands, take the larger one: we refund the difference if your bay comes in shorter, and a band that is too small means a price change later.

You do not need to be exact yet. The box below is for your best figure, and we confirm everything from the measuring form before anything is cut. If your bay is curved rather than angled, or longer than the bands here, ask us and we will quote it.

Curtain weights

These poles are 45mm, which carries up to 3kg of curtain per metre of pole. If you are hanging interlined curtains (fabrics with an additional layer sewn between the lining and the face cloth) across a wide bay, ask us about 55mm, which carries up to 5kg per metre on two brackets or 7kg on three.

Beyond the options shown

The ten Rustica finishes and six finials here are the most popular, but Byron make Metamorph in 55mm, in all twelve Rustica finials, and in every other Byron collection, from the painted Barnwood range to the gilded Manor and Heritage finishes. Poles can also be painted to a Farrow & Ball, Dulux or Little Greene colour, and 55mm bay poles can be supplied tracked or corded. How ordering works

Place your order with the finish, finial, bay shape and size band you want, and we will email you a measuring form. Once your measurements are back with us and confirmed, the pole goes into production at Byron's workshop. Nothing is cut until you have signed the measurements off. Metamorph bay poles are made to your own measurements. You do not need to measure before you order, and you cannot get it wrong at this stage: the shape and size you pick on this page set the price, and we confirm the exact figures with you afterwards.

1. Place your order. Choose the finish, the finials and the number of bends in your bay, and put your best estimate of the total pole length in the box. Neither has to be exact.
2. We send you a measuring form. Within one working day you will get an email with a form for your bay, along with instructions and a diagram. All measurements are taken at the height you want the pole, in millimetres, with a metal tape.
3. We check the figures and confirm the price. The price shown here covers a bay of the usual size for that number of bends. If yours is materially longer we will tell you before anything is made, and if it is shorter we will refund the difference. We look over what you send and come back to you if anything does not add up. If you would rather have a professional measure the bay, Byron keep a list of independent fitters they have trained on the system, covering most of the UK. Ask us and we will pass on the details.
4. You approve the drawing. Byron produce a technical drawing of your pole and we email it to you. Nothing is cut until you have signed that off.
5. Into production. The pole is turned, bent and finished by hand in Byron's north London workshop, then crated and sent on a next-day service.

Fitting

The pole arrives in one piece with the brackets, rings and finials. The brackets are adjustable, with a projection between 11cm and 15cm, so there is room to line the pole up with the window. Fitting a bay pole is within reach of a confident DIYer, but it is a two-person job: the pole is long, it is heavy, and it will only sit correctly if the brackets are level with each other rather than level with the ceiling.

We do not offer a measuring or fitting service ourselves, and we do not recommend local fitters beyond Byron's own trained list.
